(Reuters) — Residents of northern Japan struggled on Monday (January 16) shoveling snow off rooftops and outside their homes after a winter storm dumped up to two meters (6.56 ft) of snow.

The Blizzard hit northern and some central Japanese area since Friday (January 13) causing disruption of public transport across Japan and forced the authorities to issue warning over safety concerns.

Japan’s NHK reported a 61-year-old man in Niigata Prefecture was trapped under a snowplow and later died in a hospital. News bulletins showed locals clearing snow on top of their roofs without safety equipment.

Japan Meteorological Agency said the heavy snow with strong wind would subside from late Monday but may return later this week.
