MIASCOR loses MIAA contract following luggage theft incident

(Eagle News) — The Manila International Airport Authority on Friday terminated its contract with its ground handler following a luggage theft incident that saw an Overseas Filipino Worker losing over P82,000 worth of his belongings.

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal ordered MIASCOR Groundhandling Corp. to leave the airport premises in 60 days.

The directive was contained in a notice dated January 19, and addressed to MIASCOR president Fidel Herman Reyes.

On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte himself ordered the termination of the ground handler’s contract following complaints made by Jovenil dela Cruz that he lost P82,824 worth of items to the baggage handlers who forcibly opened his luggage at the Clark International Airport.

Duterte chastised airport officials over the incident, and demanded that they issue a public apology to Dela Cruz.

MIASCOR also compensated Dela Cruz for the lost items, and fired its employees who were involved.

Charges were also filed against them.
