QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Public utility jeep drivers and operators are set to conduct another transport strike on Monday, May 22, to protest the plan of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to phase out and scrap old jeepneys.
George San Mateo, president of the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide, and Convenor of “No to Jeepney Phase-Out Coalition” (NJPOC), explained that although the government assured them there would be no jeepney phase-out, the LTFRB said that it would implement a “scrappage” program this year.
Under the scrappage program, old and dilapidated jeepneys will be banished from the roads and will be replaced by environment-friendly, electricity-powered vehicles, this under the agency’s modernization program.
