MIAMI, Florida (Eagle News) — Walking into this small market in the Doral area of Miami at first might seem no different than walking into other shops that are open for business. The clerk behind the counter greets you, an assortment of snacks, spices, and sauces line the shelves, and little knickknacks such as clothes, flags, and CDs decorate the walls of the establishment. But what makes this store standout is that all the products for sale are strictly Brazilian.
“All the products you see here food and a little bit of clothes are only Brazilian,” says Armanda Ferrari, an employee of Brazil Mart.
It becomes obvious as a look even at the beauty products reveals products such as O Boticário, a product from Brazil.
In the air, there is the aroma of baked goods. Among the most popular is brigadeiro, a common Brazilian delicacy. Small tables entice customers to relax and enjoy their meal in the mart before they complete their shopping errands.
When asked about the clientele, Ferrari, says, “We mostly get Brazilians, and a little bit of Hispanic and American.”
While Miami is home to many different people from Latin America, the Brazilian population still accounts for only a small percentage of the Miami minority population. An increase in the Brazilian population in this area though has become more prevalent. Restaurants have thus far dominated the Brazilian culture scene of Miami, however, there are a few small stores like Brazil Mart that are springing up in the area.
Two Brazilian immigrants confessed that they greatly appreciate having a place to buy their products, but with so few stores in the area they hope more will appear to increase selection.
Non-Brazilian customers also enjoy the mart as a source of Brazilian food. One Venezuelan customer said he really enjoys brigadeiro.
