(Eagle News) — There might be less floods in Manila this rainy season and this school opening.

This was after the completion of the PHP203.4 million flood control project which will ease flooding in the areas of Manila City Hall and Intramuros.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that this important flood control project has just been finished, resulting in the easy discharging of flood waters into Manila Bay.

The project involved the construction of bigger reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) with a diameter of 60 inches along the 2.27-kilometer Padre Burgos Avenue, which will serve as drainage in Manila, said DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) Director Melvin Navarro.

“Our goal is to directly catch the floodwaters in the area around Manila City Hall and Intramuros which will be pumped out by the newly constructed pumping station, providing convenience to pedestrians and protection to properties,” Navarro said.

The drainage was constructed at the stretch of P. Burgos Avenue from Luneta Pumping Station passing Manila City Hall to Anda Street, Intramuros.

“Floodwaters can now be easily discharged to Manila Bay with the bigger draining capacity of our pipes, plus the two (2) submersible pumps with a capacity of 0.75 cubic meter per second,” he said.

“The completion of this project is in time for the upcoming rainy season,” the DPWH-NCR official added.

The new wider drainage is now serviceable and linked with the newly improved Luneta Pumping Station.
