A Makati court has allowed Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to travel abroad.

In allowing Trillanes to travel to the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom from December 11, 2018 to January 12, 2019,  and to the United States from January 27, 2018 to February 10, 2019, Judge Elmo Alameda of the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 noted the senator’s past actions that “demonstrate his willingness to abide with the conditions imposed for his provisional liberty..”

For this, Alameda cited the absence of an attempt on the part of Trillanes to leave the country when Proclamation No. 572 that declared the amnesty granted to him for the Oakwood mutiny and the Peninsula Manila siege in 2003 and 2007, respectively, was issued.

He also noted Trillanes’ voluntary surrender when a warrant of arrest was issued against him and served against him on Sept. 25.

“Senator Trillanes voluntarily went with the arresting police officers to the Makati Police Station where he wsa booked, fingerprinted, photographed, and medically examined,” Alameda said, noting that Trillanes also specified the duration of his travel and the places he will visit.

According to Alameda, Trillanes’ travel abroad as a senator “may broaden his outlook of the problems of the country which he may use in proposing bills which is the core of Congress’ lawmaking.”

Alameda required Trillanes to post a P200,000 travel bond, and ordered the  hold departure order issued against Trillanes on Sept. 25 “temporarily lifted.”

In filing his motion to travel, Trillanes had cited the need to participate in “various activities” that include speaking engagements, among others, in the performance of his duties.

Trillanes, who is out on bail, faces a separate case of coup d’etat in the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 148.
