WASHINGTON, D.C., United States (Reuters) — United States President Donald Trump offered words of encouragement about the condition of shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise to Congressional staff and their families at a picnic in their honor in the White House South Lawn on Thursday (June 22).

Trump said “things are looking very, very good,” for Congressman Scalise, just over one week after he was shot in the hip by rifle fire during a Congressional charity baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

The gunman in last week’s attack was killed in a gun battle with Capitol police. Trump thanked special agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who fired back at the identified shooter, James Hodgkinson of Illinois, for their service.
