QUEZON City, Philippines (October 24) – Many Facebook privacy hoaxes have circulated the internet for the past few years and this “new” hoax ain’t nothing really new. Yet, people still believe these messages.
The message was:
Many netizens believed this message and reposted it on their wall, thus resulting into more circulation for the hoax and creating a near endless cycle of self-propagation.
The same Facebook privacy hoax has been around since November 2012. Facebook already addressed the issue stating that “They control how that content and information is shared. That is our policy, and it always has been.”(source: cbsnews.com)
It is also stated in the Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities that contents of a Facebook account can be published only if it is in “Public” setting. It gives access to everyone about that information. But setting the content to “Private”, it won’t be accessed by others. People who use Facebook need to agree to those terms when creating an account. Have someone ever read those terms? Not those who reposted the hoax, I think.
Another hoax have circulated in 2011 saying that users need to pay $9.10 to keep the subscription of the users status to be set to “private”. Same rules, reposting it to be safe or if not, all posts, even deleted messages and photos. It ends with another “it does not cost anything for a simple copy and paste.” Talk about an obvious hoax.
We can’t blame the people who have reposted it either, maybe securing their account security is in their top priority, but rest assured, No information would be accessed by the public unless you want them to.
It really does not hurt us nor cost anything for a simple copy and paste. But reposting it doesn’t really help. It just proves how gullible you are. Those who say “Better be safe than sorry” better start reading the agreement they agreed upon using Facebook.
