Guevarra to NBI: Probe killing of former Cebu prosecutor

(Eagle News) — Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Friday, Jan. 18, ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to probe the killing of former Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Mary Ann Castro.

Guevarra said he made the directive for the NBI to “identify the perpetrators at the soonest possible time” in a text message to reporters.

Castro was shot dead as she was driving her Nissan Juke vehicle on Escario St. on Thursday, Jan. 17.

The police have said they were looking into the cases she was working on when she was assistant prosecutor at the Cebu City Prosecutors Office.

They said they were also looking into her previous relationship with a police officer, who was killed in a buy-bust operation in Bohol in June.

Castro was an assistant prosecutor for over 10 years until she resigned.

She has been suspended at least twice during her stint, one of them for alleged excessive use of power when she reportedly asked the police to help her brother who had bought a defective vehicle.
