Grenade thrown inside Zamboanga City mosque leaves 2 dead, several injured

Zamboanga PNP: Incident not linked to Jolo, Sulu blasts so far

(Eagle News)—Two people were killed and several were hurt after a grenade thrown inside a mosque in Zamboanga exploded early Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The fatalities in the incident in Barangay Talon-talon past midnight were identified as Habil Rex, 46, and Bato Sattal, 47.

Those hurt were initially identified as Yasson Asgali, Albani Jikilani, Paulo Salahuddin and Amidz Kassara.

The victims were allegedly sleeping when the grenade, a component of which was found by authorities in the scene, was thrown.

The incident took place days after the Jolo, Sulu blasts that killed at least 21.

In an interview over GMA’s Unang Balita though, Senior Insp. Shelamie Chang, Zamboanga police spokesperson, said the two incidents were not linked so far.

“Initially parang hindi po namin sila kino-connect kasi grenade throwing po ito eh. Sa Jolo is IED (improvised explosive device) pero ‘yung level naman po ng aming alertness ay mataas pa rin po,” she said.
