Galvez eyeing to recommend another extension of martial law in Mindanao; cites gains

(Eagle News)—Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Carlito Galvez is eyeing to recommend another extension of martial law in Mindanao once it lapses in December.

Galvez made the comment as he touted the gains of the imposition of martial law in the southern part of the country in a nationally televised press conference.

“Martial law has led to increased tourist and economic activity in Mindanao, especially in areas previously thought of as inaccessible to visitors from Luzon and Visayas,” Galvez said.

According to Galvez, even the movements of terrorist groups Army have been restrained.

He said this would not have been possible without martial law even with the existing anti-terrorism law in the country.

“If our anti-terrorism law is as strong as Singapore, Malaysia where they can detain suspects for 12 months, then we don’t need the martial law,” Galvez said.

“I have not met any LGU official from Mindanao who said we have to stop martial law. That is because they want to sustain the gains that we had in maintaining peace and security,” Galvez added.
