Filipinos in Saudi Arabia warned vs tropical cyclone “Mekunu”

(Eagle News)—Filipinos in Saudi Arabia have been told to prepare for tropical cyclone “Mekunu” that is expected to hit the western part of the kingdom over the weekend.

The Philippine Consulate in Jeddah said Filipinos in Najran and the surrounding areas,in particular, should beware of torrential rains and flashfloods, a Department of Foreign Affairs statement said on Sunday, May 27.

Based on the statement, Consul General Edgar Badajos said the Saudi weather agency has predicted heavy rains from Saturday (May 26) to Tuesday (May 29).

“Dust brought about by the winds is also expected to reduce visibility over Tabuk, Madinah, Makkah, Sharqiyah and Riyadh. Rainy clouds are further expected over Jizan, Asir and Al Baha region,” the DFA said.

The DFA said the Saudi Civil Defense also “advised the public to stay away from streams and torrents of valleys in areas to be affected by heavy rains.”

The DFA said there are 8,000 Filipinos in Najran, 15,000 in Johann, and 13,000 in Khamis Mushayt.
