(Eagle News) — Signal No. 1 is now raised over the province of Batanes, as Gorio moved faster in the northwest direction, and is expected to approach Taiwan on Sunday.

According to Loriedin Dela Cruz, a weather forecaster at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, Gorio was now moving at 30 kilometers per hour, slightly faster than its initial speed.

“Inaasahan nating bukas, kung di magbabago ang bilis ng takbo at direksyon nitong si bagyong Gorio, ay nasa layong 400 kilometers po siya east of Basco, Batanes,” she said.

She said  32 to 60 kilometers per hour of maximum sustained winds are expected within the next 36 hours.

Gorio, she said, may cause “light to medium damage” to “high-risk structures.”

“High-risk structures,” she said, were houses made of light materials.

“Twigs of small trees may also be broken. Kasama na dito ang agricultural plants such as rice crops,” she said.

According to Dela Cruz, based on Pagasa’s 24-hour rainfall report, from 8 a.m. of July 26 to 8 a.m. of July 27, the highest rainfall amount was recorded in Iba, Zambales (149.2 millimeters).

This was followed by Sangley Point (87.2 millimeters), then by Subic Bay (85.2 millimeters), and Port Area in Metro Manila (82.4 millimeters).

“Kung mapapansin natin, halos western part of luzon ang nakapagtala talaga ng malalaking  rainfall amount and also light to moderate rainfall amount sa portion ng Cagayan province, which is part of Isabela,” she said.

Moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Luzon, Western Visayas

She said Gorio will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon that  will “bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains” over Luzon that includes Metro Manila…, and Western Visayas.”

She said these would include thunderstorms.

“And then flashfloods and landslides are also possible in affected areas, yung mga nabanggit kong areas,” she said.

She said coastal waters over Western Luzon are expected to be “moderate to rough.”

“Although wala pa tayong nakataas na gale warning, paalala po natin sa ating mga sea travellers, na ang ating wave height ay umaabot na from 1.25 to 4 meters, and dangerous ito sa small sea vessels,” she said.
