Russia quake magnitude revised to 7.8, but tsunami “not expected” — US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 7.8 quake shook Russia, 199 kilometers east southeast of Nikol’skoye off Bering Strait, triggering fears of a tsunami as the quake struck at a depth of only 11.7 kilometers.

The quake struck at 7:34 a.m. (Manila time) in Russia. The quake’s magnitude was initially reported at 7.7 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), but was later revised to 7.8.

The United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that “based on all available data, a destructive Pacific wide tsunami is not expected.”

“Based on all available data…, the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed,” it said.

The US Tsunami Warning Center listed the quake’s location, particularly its epicenter, 120 miles southeast of Bering Island, Komandorski, Russia.   (Eagle News Service)
