Government assures Senate hearing, no threat, no other claimant in Benham Rise

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — The government assured that no party was threatening the Philippines’ claim on the Benham Rise.

“We don’t see (any threat). There could be, but we could not see any right now. We are also aware that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China saying they recognize (the Philippines’) sovereign rights. I don’t see (threats) in the near future,” National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., said.

Esperon noted that the Philippines was the recognized and sole owner of the Benham Rise.

“There could be (a threat) but we don’t see any right now. Pronouncements of the Foreign Affairs of China are saying that they recognize our sovereign rights over Benham Rise,” Esperon added.
