Duterte wants to investigate CHR for “conspiracy,” but CHR claims it is just doing its job

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Fed up with the continuous defense of the Commission on Human Rights regarding the rights of criminals, President Rodrigo Duterte said he wants to place the human rights advocates under investigation.

“One of these days, kayong Human Rights, kayo ang imbestigahin ko. Totoo. Conspiracy,” the President said during a speech at the 19th anniversary of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption in Malacañang on Wednesday, August 16.

He also said that he is really curious as to why the CHR is always on the side of the criminals while staying silent regarding the rights of victims of violent crimes.

“Para makita talaga kung anong klaseng human right… Galit ako sa inyo. Because hindi niyo tinitimpla kung anong klaseng papasukan ninyo. Basta human rights. Eh ilang biktima na dito? ‘Yung lima na namatay, anong… ‘Yung one-year-old na ginulgol doon? ‘Yung human rights diyan nasaan?” the President said.

The President on Thursday, August 16 alleged that the human rights advocates give an unfair criticism on his war on drugs campaign by protecting drug criminals.

“They could not even utter it in public. ‘Look, do not do that to me,’ sabi ng human rights. Wala. Tapos itong mga criminal, babandera ka, ‘human rights, ano,’” Duterte said.

“What about the human rights? Hanggang rekomendasyon lang sila. They can write anything. Condemn the police, condemn everybody, pagdating ng recommendation, wala naman,” he added.

Meanwhile, the CHR defended its actions, saying that it was merely doing its job.

The CHR made the statement in response to President’s threat of placing the Commission under investigation.  The President also hit the CHR for alleged obstruction of justice.

CHR spokesperson Jacqueline De Guia defended the commission’s actions, saying that it was only doing “its constitutional duty.”

“The Commission wishes to reiterate that it is merely doing its constitutional duty and it remains hopeful that the government will recognize that the guarantee of equal protection of the law as well as fair and impartial trial including investigation is a constitutional right available to every single Filipino,” De Guia, CHR spokesperson, said in a statement.
