(Eagle News) — The government has formally sought the declaration of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army as a terrorist group.

Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Peter Ong filed on Wednesday a petition for proscription with the Manila Regional Trial Court.

President Rodrigo Duterte called off peace talks with the communist rebels last year, and later issued a proclamation declaring the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.

Section 17 of Republic Act No. 9372, or the Human Security Act of 2007, provides, however, that the government first seek the approval of the court through the Department of Justice before any group can be outlawed.
