The Bureau of Customs on Wednesday, April 11, announced it has seized P2.1 million worth of smuggled “ukay ukay” clothes from the Manila International Container Terminal.

Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapena said the clothes from Hong Kong were concealed in balikbayan boxes, which were declared as containing household goods and personal items.

Under the law, the importation of used clothes is illegal because their use results in adverse health effects.

“They are trying to fool us and to deceive agents on the ground,” Lapena said.

He said charges would be filed against the importer and broker.

It was one Salvador Labiano Jr. who processed the shipment, according to Lapena.

“And if warranted, we will suspend their Customs accreditation,” he said.
