(Eagle News) — The Philippine Coast Guard confiscated a shipment containing over 7,000 sacks of smuggled rice in Zamboanga City.

Lt. Commander Noriel Ramos, Zamboanga Coast Guard Station commander said the smuggled rice may have an estimated market value of Php 11 million.

The rice shipment was intercepted around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11 after an informant revealed that sacks of rice were being unloaded in the area.

The official said the contraband was transported from Malaysia via motorboat.

Ramos said that when the Coast Guard personnel arrived, some of the rice shipment had already been unloaded and stockpiled near a mosque. The vessel that also transported the sacks of rice had already left when the PCG anti-smuggling team arrived.
