China urges the United States to abide by the one-China principle, so as to avoid harm to bilateral ties and cooperation in important areas, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday at a regular press conference.

Hua made the remarks in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s statement that one-China principle is negotiable.

“There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. And the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China. This is the internationally recognized fact, and no one can change it,” Hua said.

“In addition, I want to stress that the one-China principle is the political foundation of bilateral ties between China and the United States, and is non-negotiable,” Hua said.

“We urge the United States to recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan question, and to honor the commitment made by the the successive US administrations under either of the two parties, that is, to follow the one-China principle and the principles in the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiqués, and to handle the Taiwan question properly, so as to avoid any impacts on the sound development of China-US relations and cooperation in major areas,” said Hua.
