Bulacan court denies Palparan’s appeal of decision convicting him

(Eagle News) — The Malolos Regional Trial Court has denied former Major General Jovito Palparan’s appeal for it to overturn its earlier decision finding him guilty of serious illegal detention and kidnapping charges in connection with the disappearance of University of the Philippines students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeno.

In his 60-page appeal filed on Sept. 19, Palparan noted what he said were the flawed testimonies that the court cited in sentencing him to reclusion perpetua, and in ordering him to pay P200,000 for moral damages and P100,000 for civil indemnity for each count.

Palparan had also questioned the filing of a case against his co-accused, Lt. Col. Felipe Anotado and S/Sgt. Edgardo Osorio, who were also sentenced to reclusion perpetua by the Bulacan court.

In October, 16 days after his conviction, Palparan was transferred from military custody to the New Bilibid Prison, where he is serving his sentence.
