(Eagle News) – Senator Bam Aquino is seeking re-election under the opposition Liberal Party as he filed his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday, October 16, at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) main office in Manila.

Aquino is seeking his second term as senator.

On Tuesday, human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno also filed his certificate of candidacy as a senatorial bet also under the opposition Liberal Party.

Diokno served as chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and is a founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law.

Aquino spoke to reporters at the Comelec, saying that there were certain quarters who were urging him not to run, citing the present political climate in the country.

But he said that he had insisted on running.

“Hindi pa po tapos ang ating pangarap sa ating bansa. Ang pangarap natin simple lang – isang maunlad na bayan na walang maiiwan,” he told reporters.

Aquino was one of the senators seeking to suspend the excise tax on fuel, as he recently filed the “Bawas Presyo Bill.”

Aquino is a cousin of former President Benigno Noynoy Aquino III, while Diokno is the son of the late nationalist senator Jose “Pepe” Diokno.   (with a report and photos from Jerold Tagbo, Eagle News Service)
