Philippine International Convention Center (Eagle News Service) — President Rodrigo Duterte, Chair of the 30th ASEAN Summit said that the world leaders “had engaging, productive and fruitful deliberations on ASEAN’s work in community building and the implementation of the blueprints and work plans of the three community pillars – the Political-Security, Economic Community and the Socio-Cultural Community” in the realization of ASEAN Vision 2025.

Speaking to local and international media at the Philippine International Convention Center, President Duterte said that the country’s chairing of ASEAN this year is “doubly significant,” as it marks its 50th Anniversary.

“As we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of our regional grouping, we honor the Founding Fathers of ASEAN for their steadfast commitment of bringing an open, peaceful, stable and prosperous region,” the President said.

International interest and concerns

The world leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest and concern and noted the importance of ASEAN cooperation in addressing issues that affect the peace, security and prosperity of the region including terrorism, violent extremism, piracy, human trafficking, and the drug menace.

“We looked at the progress of our cooperation with external partners and the future direction of ASEAN’s engagement with them, noting the importance of ASEAN centrality and the reality that relations bear fruit if cooperation is anchored on mutual respect and benefit,” Duterte said.

Engine of the ASEAN growth

He emphasized the leaders’ productive engagement with parliamentarians and the ASEAN youth. “They are vital components in keeping the engine of ASEAN growth running smoothly,” he said.

Referring to the ASEAN Declaration on the Role of the Civil Service as a Catalyst for achieving the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 signed by the heads of state earlier, he said that “this underscores the essential role of civil servants in building and nurturing our community.”

Call to the ASEAN peoples

As the 30th ASEAN Summit draws to a close, he acknowledged the need to deepen the awareness and instill a sense of community among the peoples of the ASEAN.

“We look forward to the full and active participation of all ASEAN citizens for them to effectively play as key partners in the positive change in community building,” the 30th ASEAN Summit Chair said.
