ASEAN countries seek to forge stronger ties against terrorism

The two-day 2018 Southeast Asia Counter-Terrorism Symposium started on Thursday, October 4 at the Raffles City Convention Center in Singapore, which aims to discuss ways towards greater concerted efforts against terrorism.

With the theme “2018 Southeast Asia Counter-Terrorism Symposium: A collective approach,” the seminar intends to examine building societal resilience against terrorism, applying appropriate counter-measures against the region’s increasingly militarized terror networks, employing advanced technologies, and exploring areas of cooperation to enhance ASEAN’s collective capacity against terrorism.

These are the four important threads to help the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states to counter the threat of terrorism.

In his speech, ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for Political and Security Community Hoang Anh Tuan noted that terrorism remains one of the most dangerous threats to regional peace, stability and prosperity, and called for the strengthening of the ASEAN member countries’ capacity to combat terrorism.

He said that it was important for ASEAN countries to be able to fight even cyber terrorism which is becoming prevalent in the region.  He noted that not all countries in the ASEAN region know how to fight this emerging threat.

The symposium was organized by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies of the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore as part of Singapore’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year.  It will run until Friday, Oct. 5.
