(Eagle News) — A 5.9 magnitude earthquake shook Surigao del Norte Friday night, February 8, with its epicenter located 28 kilometers southeast of General Luna town of this province, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
Phivolcs said the quake which hit the province at 7:55 p.m., Friday, would like be followed by aftershocks.
The quake was felt at intensity 5 in Surigao City: intensity 4 in Gingoog City; intensity 3 in Cagayan de Oro City, Borongan City, Cebu City; and intensity 2 in Catbalogan City.
It had a relatively shallow depth, measured at 19 kilometers by Phivolcs, and 24 kilometres by the US Geological Survey
A Phivolcs advisory said that the tectonic was not expected to have caused damage.
The Philippines is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from quake-prone Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
