Japanese Encephalitis 101

QUEZON City, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public about the different deadly diseases primarily caused by mosquito bites. The latest of such disease that caught the public attention is Japanese encephalitis or JE. The disease claimed nine lives already just this year.

Japanese encephalitis is an infection of the brain caused by the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a flavivirus related to dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile viruses.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), JEV is the main cause of viral encephalitis in many countries of Asia with an estimated 68 000 clinical cases every year.

The first case of the viral disease was documented in Japan in 1871, hence giving it its name.
